Oh no! You just read in the Dogington Post that your dog’s food was recalled and you don’t know what to do.

Here’s a simple guide:

First, my recommendation is you put the bag of dog food aside and don’t feed it to your dog any longer.

Some people are going to say, “Ralph, that’s obvious!” but I know that many people figure if nothing bad has happened, they can go on as scheduled.

Don’t feed any food that has been recalled to your dog.

Second, do not return the package to the store where you bought it.  If your dog gets sick, you may need it for testing or to make a claim in case you face an expensive bill at the Vet.

Third, look at the ingredients in the dog food and write them down.

Go to your favorite pet supply store and find a food that has ingredients that are similar.

Give your dog smaller portions for a few days as they adjust to the new food.

Since you’ll have to switch your dog to a new food without time to make a proper transition such as after a recall, replacing about 30% of his normal portion with canned pumpkin (100% pure pumpkin, not pie filling!) will help to ease the upset stomach and gastrointestinal stress of switching foods.

Do this for about a week, slowly adding less pumpkin until your dog is fully transitioned to the new food. Pumpkin is a great source of dietary fiber and dogs normally love the taste, too!

Fourth, at the slightest sign of a problem immediately alert your vet.  Most likely they will want to see your baby right away.
