Dog Dies in Walmart Parking Lot During Owner’s 13-Hour Shopping Spree

A 49-year old woman from Crestview, Florida, was arrested on Monday and charged with one count of misdemeanor cruelty to animals after leaving her dog in the car in the Walmart parking lot.

Cassaundra Rasmussen left her dog, Waldo, in the car, with the driver’s side window slightly cracked when she parked at her local Walmart store.

Another shopper discovered the dog around 11am on Friday. By the time help arrived, Waldo had already died from heat exhaustion. There was no food or water left in the car with him and temperatures outside soared.

When police confronted Rasmussen, she had been shopping inside Walmart for 13 hours.

She told police she simply forgot he was in the car. She is currently in custody of Okaloosa County Jail.

I don’t think it’s possible to SHOP for 13 hrs (in the same store) Anyway, she needs a very stiff punishment. I say jail time. A precious life was taken unnecessarily. Look at the tapes from cameras in the store and at the doorway. Something doesn’t seem right. R.I.P. sweet baby. <3

Animal cruelty is a felony in 49 states, here in Ohio it is still considered a misdemeanor, unfortunately. We are trying to get it upgraded to a felony, but the state legislature doesn’t want to vote either way on the bills.

Shes a meth addict- you can tell by her photo, and that is very typical behavior for someone on meth- not any kind of excuse, but for those of you who want to know how anyone can spend that long… That’s the exact reason…

my only problem with your comment is referring to people who shop at wal mart as not being considerate. i always shop at wal mart im not going to let some dog die in a car. if i see a dog in a car please believe the windows will be broken and the dog will be gone.

Thank you Nicola. I shop at Walmart and used to work for them.
I hated working the sidewalk sales cause I was always scanning the close cars in the parking lot for animals and kids left behind. And I always had my cell phone.

People please bust the window as a first response, quit being so afraid to take action. This lady could have saved the dog if she would’ve busted window but no, she let dog suffer as well.

People should bust the window as a first response. The dog may still be alive, because police take forever.
