Description
The Dogue de Bordeaux, also known as the French Mastiff or Bordeaux Bulldog, is a well-known breed of short, stocky dog that originated in France. It belongs to the Working breed family which is notable for their excellent guarding and water-rescuing skills. Bordeaux Bulldogs have been bred to become guarding and hunting dogs. Their smooth coat is soft and loose-fitting to the skin. Colors commonly include mahogany and fawn.
Height and Weight
Both the male and female members of the Dogue de Bordeaux breed normally stand a height of 23 to 30 in at the withers, and weigh about 120 to 145 lbs.
Temperament
Bordeaux Bulldogs, in general, have a pleasant temperament. They are patient, very loyal, and devoted to their family owners. The breed is fearless and typically confrontational with strangers; making them among the first class guard and watch dogs. To keep them from becoming aggressive, proper socialization at young age is highly recommended. Bordeaux Bulldogs tend to snore and drool. Despite their fearsome look, the breed is gentle with children, and other family members. Because they are a powerful dog, they are usually not suitable for inexperienced handlers. Bordeaux Bulldogs need an owner who can be calm yet firm in dealing with them. They require handlers who have the natural authority over them; someone who is self-assured and consistent in disciplining them.
Grooming
Bordeaux Bulldogs are a heavy drooler so owners have to wipe off their saliva on a regular basis. Their coat coat requirements are minimal. Occasional combing would already be enough to keep their smooth coat in good condition.
Health Concerns
Although Bordeaux Bulldogs are known to be brave and to stand out in dog fights, they are usually short-lived. In fact, the breed only has an average lifespan of 8 to 12 years. Some of the common health conditions associated with them are bloat, heart diseases, cancer, epilepsy, hip dysplasia, and over-sensitivity to hot temperatures.
Best Environment
The mature members of the Dogue de Bordeaux breed are typically inactive indoors. They can adjust to living in an apartment, though may do better with access to a spacious yard. Because the breed is prone to suffer from heatstroke, owners are advised to provide them with a regular supply of drinking water. In addition, Bordeaux Bulldogs only have moderate exercise requirements. As a matter of fact, regular jogging can already meet their exercise needs.
