The faithful canine companion of a woman struck and killed by a tractor-trailer mourned his owner’s death, refusing to leave the spot in the road where she passed away.

So far, Paco, the heartbroken dog, is the only witness to what Jacksonville, Florida police are calling a hit-and-run, unsure of whether the driver of the truck was even aware they’d struck and killed 42-year old Kelly Black on Friday.

CBS 5 reported,

The victim’s dog waited patiently while police covered up his owner’s body. With his head held low, Paco the dog watched as police put up crime scene tape around him. Lying there helpless as his owner was taken away from him.

Onlookers say Paco laid in the road where his owner was killed for several hours, resting his head on the asphalt, still wearing the red bandana she’d placed around his neck that morning.

Black’s family, who said she and Paco were inseparable, took him home.

Police are reviewing surveillance video from a nearby gas station and are trying to track down the big rig truck that struck Black.
