A man, his wife, and three children are alive today, thanks to the heroic action of their dog, a German Shepherd.

On the Friday after Thanksgiving, the family were out driving in Atlanta. At some point in their journey, they became involved in a road rage incident and were followed to a small shopping plaza.

Though the SUV loaded up with a family, including three children and the family dog, had pulled into a parking space, the other vehicle involved drove away, only to return a few minutes later to open fire on the SUV with the family still inside.

As bullets shot through the SUV windows, shattering them and flying past the children and their mother, the family dog put himself between the shooter and his family, protecting them.

None of the family members were hit, but the dog was fatally wounded in the attack.

Several witnesses said they watched the dog jump in the path of the bullets to protect his family.

A surveillance video captured the injured dog running away from the scene. He was found behind the shopping center, dead from his injuries.

“They were fired upon and their family was terrorized,” said Atlanta Police Sgt.Gregory Lyon. “They survived that only to find that their pet is now gone. It’s sad for the whole family, especially the day after Thanksgiving.”

Atlanta Police are actively searching for the vehicle involved in the shooting. Those involved are facing multiple charges, including animal cruelty for their involvement in the death of the dog.

My condolences go out to the family in flooding their beloved pet. Your pet is a hero. It’s a very bad thing when road rage is involved. Be proud of your dog. He’s in heaven now looking down on you. He’s earned his doggie wings. Bless him.
