It’s the season of LOVE!
Despite what one may think they know about love, one never knows the real feeling until adopting a pet. The love, affection, loyalty and appreciation rescued dogs show are unparalleled.
So, this Valentine’s Day season, The Dogington Post along with PetGiftBox.com are helping to spread the word about 7 adoptable pups that have been looking for love for more than a year in the hope that they all get adopted in time for Valentine’s Day.
For some, this won’t be their first, second, or even their third Valentine’s Day behind bars.
Every dog deserves to be loved, so we’ve selected 7 special dogs from around the country that have been overlooked time and time again. Some are senior dogs, some have special needs, and some are passed over for reasons we simply can’t understand – but, they all deserve to spend their lives with a family of their own.
Meet Wheeler!
Wheeler is a victim of breed discrimination. Wheeler came to Perry County Humane Society in Du Quoin, IL in March 2013 when his family that consisted of two adults and one 3 year old moved into a new rental home they thought was pet friendly. After the land lord found out that Wheeler was a pit bull she informed the family that Wheeler had to leave because the insurance on the home would not cover the home if a pit bull was there. Wheeler had to leave immediately. Wheeler was in the home since he was a puppy. He was potty trained and did not have any behavior issues and co existed with a small child just fine.
Wheeler will soon face another Valentine’s Day without the LOVE of a family of his own.
A little more about me…
Dog’s Name: Wheeler
Age: 4 years
How long at shelter/rescue: 3 years!
Type/Size/Sex: Brindle Pit Bull/Large/Neutered Male
Likes: Wheeler loves attention!! He loves to give kisses and will give them every chance he gets. He likes to go for walks or runs. We had a volunteer at one time that would leash him to his bike and Wheeler did very well running along side of him while he rode his bike. He loves car rides and rides very well in the car (after the initial excitement of being OUT OF THE SHELTER wears off. He also loves treats (and cheeseburgers).
Dislikes: Although he loves the people that take really good care of him at the shelter he really wants to leave and find a forever home. Other than that, Wheeler doesn’t really have much that he dislikes.
Special considerations: He is good with other dogs, cats, and kids. Wheeler visits at a volunteer’s house that has 1 large dog, 1 small dog and 2 cats. Wheeler does fine with them. Wheeler is not house broken anymore due to living in a shelter environment but is very smart and will learn quickly in the right environment. Wheeler has a few bad habits that are typical when living in a shelter environment for so long that include mouthing hands for attention and jumping up on people. Wheeler wants to please and does well when guided by consistent positive behavior reinforcement and this is better done in a home environment.
The perfect family or home for Wheeler: The perfect home for Wheeler would be one that has a family that is active who will consistently take him on walks or runs. Wheeler’s perfect family would include him as part of the family and not seclude him to being outside or in one area of the house that restricts his access to his family and attention. His perfect family would use positive reinforcement behavior training to enhance his desire to please.
Does Wheeler seem like the perfect fit for your family? Here’s how to begin the adoption process:
Interested adopters can go to www.perrycountyhumanesocietyil.com to complete an online application. His petfinder page link is: www.petfinder.com/petdetail/25513241. To visit Wheeler, the shelter has open hours Sat, Sun and Mon from 2pm-4pm or by appointment. Questions about Wheeler can be answered by contacting [email protected] or (618) 542- DOGS (3647). There is an adoption fee of $150. Although our adoption policy states a restriction of 100 mile radius to adopt a special consideration will be made for an exceptional applicant during this campaign in hopes that Wheeler finds the perfect home.
Wheeler is neutered and up to date on vaccinations. He has also been heartworm tested and has been given heart worm preventative year round. Wheeler will make someone a very good companion and he deserves a great home. He ended up with us only because of his breed and he has continued to stay with us because of this. Please help us end his life sentence in a shelter!
