Description

French Bulldog

The French Bulldog, also called a Frenchie, is a trendy breed of sturdy, little dog that originated in France. It belongs to the Non-sporting breed family which is a diverse group of dogs distinguished for their unique built, personality, and appearance. French Bulldogs have been bred to become engaging companions and lapdogs. They have loose skin that forms wrinkles around their head and shoulders. Their medium-fine coat is generally short and smooth with colors that include white, fawn, brindle, and mixtures of brindle or fawn along with white shades.

Height and Weight

Both the male and female members of the French Bulldog breed generally have a height of about 11 to 13 in at the withers. Their weight is approximately 22 to 28 lbs.

Temperament

Frenchies, in general, are gentle, pleasant, and funny. They are typically affectionate, and friendly with children, other pets, and even with strangers. They like to snuggle with their owners, and they tend to bond more with people as compared to other pets. They are alert and playful, though can be rarely receptive to rough games. The breed is also known to be lively and enthusiastic. They are curious and very hilarious. Frenchies are also bright and easygoing. In addition, the breed requires leadership, and will not likely do well without it.

Grooming

Frenchies are easy to groom. Their facial wrinkles, however, need regular cleaning because of their propensity to salivate. To keep them looking great, occasional brushing and bathing is necessary. Frenchies are not heavy shedders.

Health Concerns

French Bulldogs are likely to suffer from joint diseases, heart defects, spinal disorders, and eye problems. They are also prone to heat stroke, and respiratory ailments. The breed tends to wheeze and snore, and usually have troubles in hot weather conditions. With proper diet and exercise, Frenchies can live for as long as 10 to 12 years.

Best Environment

French Bulldogs is best suited for pampered, indoor life such as apartments. Outdoor living is not suitable for them. Most can’t swim, and they barely withstand extreme temperatures. They can’t tolerate hot and humid climates; that’s why owners are advised to install functional air-conditioning units at home. In addition, Frenchies tend to be moderately active indoors. They do fine for areas with no yard space.
