French Bulldogs are now the most popular dog breed in the U.S. according to the American Kennel Club (AKC) on March 15.
The breed has overtaken the Labrador Retriever on the list, which now ranks two. Not only that, but this also ends the Labrador’s 31-year reign as the most popular dog breed in the U.S.
“Breaking the Lab’s top-dog status of over three decades is no small feat,” the AKC said in their announcement on Wednesday.
The AKC, which has the world’s largest registry of purebred dogs, uses their statistics to rank the most popular breeds every year.
According to the club, the charming French Bulldog has been climbing the popularity list over the last 10 years. And due to the rise in popularity, registrations have increased by over 1,000%.
In fact, the breed, which ranked 14th in 2012, has been the second most popular dog breed on AKC’s list since 2020 before claiming the top spot.
The petite and adorable breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1898. And according to the AKC, “they can fit into various different lifestyles, perfect for people all across the country.”
“They have surged in popularity in cities across the country since their small size and generally quiet demeanor make them good fits for apartments and smaller homes,” said the club.
However, the surge in the breed’s popularity comes at a price. Last year, it was reported that French Bulldog thefts have been on the rise across the country due to the breed’s high resale value and rarity.
Even stars like Lady Gaga were not safe from such thievery. In 2021, the pop star’s Frenchies were stolen (and eventually returned) after her dog walker was shot and wounded.
So, if you ever decide to buy or adopt a Frenchie, make sure to get to know this one-of-a-kind breed first and be vigilant of dog thieves.
