The Havanese, also known as the Havana Silk Dog, is a trendy breed of lapdog that originated in Cuba. It belongs to the Toy breed family which is notable for their tiny size and endearing expression. Just like the other toy breeds, the Havanese also represents sheer charm. They are generally bred to become engaging companions. Their profuse double coat differs from wavy to curly. It comes in numerous colors such as gold, cream white, blue, silver, black, and other parti or tricolor patterns.

Height and Weight

Both the male and female members of the Havanese breed commonly stand a height of 8 to 11 in at the withers, and weigh 7 to 13 lbs.

Temperament

Havana Silk Dogs, in general, are gentle, responsive dogs. They make natural companion pets which tend to get extremely attached to their family owners. They are cheerful, very affectionate, and tend to bond well with children. They are sociable and get along easily with other people and other animals. The breed is known to be curious, playful and intelligent. In fact, the Havanese has been popular as a circus dog because of their being easy to train, quick to learn, and being eager to please. They rarely bark a lot and tend to be neither aggressive nor timid. Even so, the breed generally makes good watchdogs.

Grooming

Since this little fellow’s hair can grow to about 6 to 8 inches in length, brushing is necessary. Havanese dogs are advised to be combed as often as every two days. To keep their hair from matting and tangling, clipping is also recommended. They are a non-shedding breed.

Health Concerns

Members of the Havanese breed tend to live long. They are generally healthy and have an average lifespan of 12 to 14 years. Nonetheless, like any other breed, Havanese dogs are also prone to a few health issues. These include hip dysplasia, poodle eye. progressive retinal atrophy, cataracts, luxating patellas, Leg-Calve Perthes Disease, Chonrdodysplasia, deafness, and dryness.

Best Environment

Havanese are suited for apartment-living. They are extremely active indoors, and will do fine in areas with no yard. The breed is born to thrive in homes, and not in kennel or patio. In addition, the Havanese breed needs an average amount of exercise. A brief daily walk on a leash or a simple game of fetch can be great for them.
