Whether it’s the luck of the Irish or the magical powers of the leprechaun, some of the greatest dog breeds stem from the Emerald Isle. For St. Patrick’s Day, take a moment to honor these 7 popular Irish dog breeds.

1. The Irish Setter: This energetic and intelligent Sporting group dog is well known for it’s loving and affectionate spirit. A wonderful addition to any family, Irish Setters are quick to bond, especially with children and other animals. From their beautiful mahogany red coat to their extraordinarily happy temperament, Irish Setters make the perfect canine companion.      

2. Glen of Imaal: One of the lesser-known of the Irish breeds, the Glen of Imaal is a short, playful and energetic terrier. Despite their small size and stature, these little dogs are quite brave and spirited, especially on the hunt for small game like fox and vermin. Because of their strong hunting instincts, it’s best to keep them away from smaller pets, like cats or hamsters, but the Glen of Imaal will make a great family pet, nonetheless.      

3. Irish Terrier: Another energetic terrier from Ireland, the Irish Terrier, is a medium sized, thick-coated, adventurous hunting dog. Known for their loyalty and affectionate nature, they are also quite entertaining! Because of their intelligence, they are naturally inquisitive and very playful. Irish Terriers will make great companion pets, but may require an owner that can devote a lot of time to training and early socialization because of this breed’s strong protective instincts.    

4. Irish Wolfhound: These giant hounds are blessed with exceptional stamina and incomparable hunting skills. Known as the tallest of all breeds, many Irish Wolfhounds grow to the size of a small horse! But, despite their size, Irish Wolfhounds are kind, gentle, and sweet-tempered. In fact, because they’re so kind and gentle with basically everyone, they don’t make great watchdogs. Because of their giant size, they’ll need a spacious home to live in, but give them a little love and they’ll give it back tenfold.

5. Irish Water Spaniel: Also known as a Whiptail, these sporting dogs are the largest of all Spaniels. Their special water-resistant, curly coat makes them naturally excellent swimmers. Irish Water Spaniels are smart, spirited, and very clever, but tend to be wary of strangers. However, bring an Irish Water Spaniel into your home and you’ll have a very loving and devoted companion.        

6. Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier: These small terriers were bred to be reliable farm dogs. They are strong, agile, and have great coordination – but can be a bit rambunctious because of their natural hunting instincts. They are a sweet, loving breed, excellent with children, that develop a strong bond with their family. While they are confident, playful, and alert, the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is generally docile. They will make a great watchdog and an even greater family pet.  

7. Kerry Blue Terrier: So named because of their dark blue tinted fur, Kerry Blue Terriers were bred as an all-purpose breed in Ireland. From farm dog, to hunter, to retriever, they are intelligent and well-rounded. Additionally, this dog’s extra playful, even comical nature makes them a joy to watch.
