Know Your Dog Laws

Penalties for dog attacks can be very expensive in several ways. The dog can be deemed a deadly menace and put down; the owner is responsible for all medical and rehabilitation costs for the individual attacked; the owner has to pay any fines incurred by the attack; in the event of a dog attack that has seriously disabled the person, they are subject to a lawsuit.

Other cases where you are liable include your dog attacking another dog. If the other dog is severely maimed or killed you are going to be subject to fines and associated costs for the care or replacement of the dog.

States also have laws for people who own any breed of dog deemed vicious, stating the owner must carry liability insurance for the dog. For some states this is 100,000 dollars. Therefore the wise dog owner gives serious consideration to what breed of dog they choose to own, with the understanding it is their butt on the line should a tragedy happen.

Learn the local and state laws concerning your liabilities as owners of dogs so you do not end up in a financial mess. As the old saying goes: “Ignorance of the law is no excuse”.
