Description

The Miniature Bull Terrier, also known as the English Bull Terrier, is a breed of strong, muscular dog that originated in England. It belongs to the terrier breed family which is distinguished for their distinct personality and hunting skills. Miniature Bull Terriers have been bred for bull baiting and companionship. Its short, dense coat is flat and somewhat harsh in texture. Coat colors usually come in pure white, or any color with white markings.

Height and Weight

Both the male and female members of the Miniature Bull Terrier breed normally stand a height of about 10 to 14 in at the withers, and weigh between 24 to 33 lbs.

Temperament

Miniature Bull Terriers, in general, are very courageous and fearless dogs. Nonetheless, they are hardly ever aggressive and dangerous. In fact, the breed is more often observed to be very gentle and affectionate towards their family owners. Miniature Bull Terriers are pleasant in nature and are usually very playful. They are determined and are very active; making them unsuitable for wimpy owners. Because of their strong personality, the breed also needs a handler who can be firm with them. They are loving, though may tend to be stubborn at times. Because of the breed’s exceeding energy, owners have to be careful in letting them play with children. Otherwise, the pet might accidentally knock a kid down and hurt them during playtime. Miniature Bull Terriers are generally good with children, though may not get along quite well with other animals.

Grooming

Members of the Miniature Bull Terrier are easy to groom. Their smooth, sleek coat only needs to be brushed twice a week. Bathing may also only be done on an occasional basis. Nevertheless, the breed may require some sunscreen protection for their exposed skin with very little hair. Otherwise, these pets might develop melanoma.

Health Concerns

Some of the common health issues associated with the breed include deafness, luxating patella, primary lens luxation, polycystic kidney disease, and Bull Terrier hereditary nephritis. Other complications include mitral valve dysplasia, aortic valve stenosis, and some skin problems. Miniature Bull Terriers, however, have an average life expectancy of 10 to 12 years.

Best Environment

Mini Bull Terriers can adapt to apartment living provided that they get to receive a lot of daily exercise. To keep them from developing behavior issues, ample mental and physical exertion has to be provided. The breed is moderately active indoors, and would do well with access to a small yard. These dogs prefer living in places with warm climate.
