A pet sitter was left wounded and his cavoodle was mauled to death in a horrifying attack that happened along the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail in Jacana on May 19.

At around 5.45 p.m., Patrick Crisostomo of Westmeadows in Melbourne’s north was out walking his 15-year-old dog, Kevy, when two off-leash pit bulls attacked them. As Crisostomo used his body to try to protect Kevy from the attack, he received many bite wounds. He needed stitches and spent the night at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

“We had him for two months, but we’ve known him for all his life. We were meant to look after him for an entire year … That was the hardest part. The emotional trauma of the loss of Kevy as well as having to tell my family who are overseas,” Crisostomo said.

Crisostomo has accused the owner of failing to do enough to stop the dogs from attacking them.

“He had this blue stick that he used to hit his dogs with to eventually get them off me,” Crisostomo said. “Once he managed to get hold of his dogs, he walked away.”

The dogs were described as medium-built and stocky, with one being brown and white and the other black. The animal’s owner was described as being in his late 30s, with dark brown hair and a medium frame, and wearing a brown jacket. Police are asking for any witnesses who were in the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail area at the time to come forward and any information that could lead to the owner and his two dogs being identified.

Crisostomo added, “I just want justice because this guy walked away and he knew someone was hurt badly and knew my dog was dead. This could happen to anyone.”
