Petition For a National Animal Abuser Registry

“People who abuse animals are psychologically diminished. They are incapable of forming healthy relationships and are dangerous to society. The correlation between violent criminals and those who abuse animals is nearly perfect. If you know someone who has done this or has talked about abusing animals it is important that they be reported. A child, defenseless adult or senior citizen will most likely be the next victim. Even if you think “it’s only an animal” remember this; animal abusers don’t stop at defenseless animals.” -Michael Moore

A petition to create a national registry on known animal abusers is currently open for signatures at the popular petition site, Change.org.

A national registry, like those created for known sexual offenders, would offer an added layer of protection to shelters, rescue groups, and individuals looking to find suitable, loving, appropriate homes for dogs and cats looking to avoid placing these animals in homes where they may not be safe.

Animal abusers listed in such a registry would include (but not be limited to) those persons involved in dog fighting, persons convicted of animal cruelty, people convicted of animal neglect, and those charged with intentionally inflicting harm or suffering on a non-human animal.

From the Petition to Create a National Registry of Known Animal Abusers:

People who intentionally hurt animals because they enjoy hurting things or because it makes them feel powerful are the worst form of living being on earth! Many of these people would hurt other people if they could get away with it. They just choose to hurt animals because animals are more helpless than people, and they have no voice – no say in what is happening to them.

We need to be their voice and stand up for them! We need a national registry for animal abusers just as we have for pedophiles and other criminals. Animal abuse is illegal and those who abuse need to be publicly acknowledged and tracked as offenders in order to help protect our society at large.

If you agree that a national registry is a necessity, please sign (and SHARE!) the petition by clicking here: www.change.org/petitions/create-a-national-registry-of-all-known-animal-abusers.

It’s about time. I was married to an abuser and he also abused our pets, throwing them out as hard as he could against a tree. Taking a declawed female cat when he was told she does not go out side and leaving her out side for wild dogs to kill her. Holding up a cat by the tail over a growling dog telling people its funny. These people need to be arrested and spend their free time in jail

It’s such an emotive subject for those of us that care for animals. I’m more than happy to have a register for abusers of animals. Those that abuse have no respect for the life of the animals they hurt. There’s no deterrent for them to stop, hence they act how they want with impunity. As with everyone on here, there should be a penalty when caught. Lets hope the politicians see sense and pass a bill to get it off the ground!

Hurting anything innocent is a crime. Hurting anything at all is a crime. Make it punishable, make it known.

WE are animals. WE are also animals. How can you say “people who abuse animals will also abuse humans. Duh! Humans are animals also. It should go “People who abuse non-human animals will also abuse human animals.

People who abuse animals are a threat to our communities. Also, no animal should end up in their hands.

  24. Linda Sims

    Nov 7, 2013 at 7:34 pm

Long overdue. Abusing, neglecting or killing of animals is a huge offense in my eyes and the eyes of a lot of people. I cannot fathom a mind that could or would do such a heinous thing. Those who do have something terrible wrong with them and I consider that a threat to not only animals but children and adults. Animals have feelings, the love and are loyal. There are smart and understand the human connection. Large fines, long imprisonment are a start. Such humans who are guilty of these crimes are a menace to society. No more misdemeanors, only felonies.

We need to protect those who cannot speak for themselves. God gave us reign over these creatures, not to abuse, but to love and protect. Every single person who abuses an animal needs to pay for their crime and be identified on a national abuse registry. Let’s do it!
