Description

The Pug, also referred to as Carlin or Mops, is a well-liked breed of tiny, thickset dog that originated in China. The breed belongs to the Toy family which has been remarkable for their diminutive size and endearing appeal. Just like the other cute members of the toy dog breed, Pugs also symbolize sheer charm. The breed has been bred to become engaging companions. Pugs have fine and smooth coat. It could come in several colors such as fawn, apricot, silver, and black.

Height and Weight

The male members of the Pug breed commonly stand about 12 to 14 in, and weigh around 13 to 20 lbs. Bitches, on the other hand, have a height of 10 to 12 in at the withers, and a weight of 13 to 18 lbs.

Temperament

Pugs are keen and happy-go-lucky. They tend to be animated, peppy, and spirited. The breed is also loyal, affectionate, and loving towards their family owners. Because they are playful and lively, Pugs can surely keep the people around them laughing. In addition, the breed is also very intelligent. They tend to get bored easily when training is not varied. Because Pugs are rather sensitive to human tone of voice, harsh punishment has to be avoided. More often than not, Pugs need masters who are calm but firm, as well as confident and consistent with rules. Pugs make excellent watch dogs. They bond well with other dogs and animals, and tend to behave impeccably around children and guests.

Grooming

The smooth coat of Pugs is easy to groom. Brush, comb, and shampoo them only when needed. To keep them from getting chilled, dry the pet thoroughly after a bath. Also, the creases on their face have to be cleaned on a regular basis. Pugs are seasonal heavy shedders.

Health Concerns

Pugs tend to catch cold very easily. They easily get stressed by cold and hot weather. The breed is prone to allergies, and their short muzzle leads to some chronic breathing difficulties. They also tend to wheeze and snore. Other conditions include obesity, Pug Dog Encephalitis, several eye problems, entropion, epilepsy, and liver diseases. Nevertheless, with proper diet, exercise, and care, Pugs can live for as long as 12 to 15 years.

Best Environment

Pugs are good for apartment-living. They are rather inactive indoors, and tend to do just fine in homes with no yard space. Most Pugs, however, rarely withstand hot or cold weather. They need to be kept indoors under a comfortable temperature. Because the breed is strong, they have to be taken on walks every day. Energetic games and regular exercise will promote better health. Moderation, nonetheless, has to be performed.

Love the popular Avengers series, with the likes of Iron
