A PAW-some trend among college and minor league baseball teams has adorable dogs in charge of retrieving bats at game time. Golden retriever ‘Rookie’ is one such bat dog.

Bat Dog

Rookie, the bat dog for the New York Yankees Double-A affiliate, the Trenton Thunder, comes from a long line of working dogs – his father and grandfather were both bat dogs, too!

But, during Monday night’s game there was a brief stop in play when the adorable dog, who’s still “perfecting his craft” according to the Trenton Thunder website, ran out to the mound to grab the ball instead of the bat.

When he’s not stopping a game for a quick round of fetch with the pitcher, Rookie and his bat dog dad, Derby, also bring water to thirsty players and put smiles on the faces of everyone in attendance.
