Description

The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, also called as Wheaten, is a popular breed of a small dog that originated in Ireland. It belongs to the Terrier breed family which is notable for their distinct personality and hunting skills. Wheatens have been bred to become reliable farm dogs and hunting companions. Their single, wavy coat generally comes in varying shades of wheaten. It also has two varieties: the Irish and the American. The former tends to be much thinner and silkier.

Height and Weight

The male members of the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier normally stand a height of 18 to 20 in at the withers, and weigh 35 to 45 lbs. The bitches, on the other hand, typically have a height of 17 to 19 in, and a weight of 30 to 40 lbs.

Temperament

Wheatens, in general, are strong, well-coordinated, and agile dogs. They are known to be happy, friendly, playful, and spirited. They are sweet and loving toward children, and tend to get along well with other dogs. They tend to bond very closely with their family owners. The breed rarely barks unnecessarily. In addition, Wheaten dogs are docile and confident. They are alert and usually make excellent watchdogs. They are intelligent and quick to learn. To keep them from developing destructive behaviors, proper socialization and firm but gentle discipline must be used by their owners.

Grooming

Because of its shaggy hair, Wheatens easily catch water and food when fed. They are usually untidy so grooming care has to be stepped up. Although they shed very little, the breed still has to be brushed every other day to keep their hair from matting. Clipping, in addition, has to be done on a monthly basis.

Health Concerns

There are quite a few health conditions associated with the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier breed. These include flea allergies, protein-losing diseases (PLE and PLN), and heart problems. Nevertheless, with proper care, diet, and exercise, Wheatens can live for as long as 12 to 14 years.

Best Environment

Members of the Wheaten Terrier breed generally require a cool and securely, fenced area to live in. Because they are a rambunctious breed, a large yard space is necessary from which they can channel their chasing and hunting instincts. With proper exercise, Wheatens can also adapt to condominium or apartment life. An hour of daily exercise needs to be provided for this active terrier breed. They like hunting adventures as well as vigorous chasing games. As an alternative, owners may take the pet for a walk or jog.
