RECALL ALERT: Spectrum Brands Pet Care Recalls DeShedding Conditioner Due To Potential Bacteria Contamination

Spectrum Brands Pet Care voluntarily recalls their FURminator deShedding Ultra Premium Dog Conditioner due to potential contamination of bacteria.

The recalled product is a dog fur deshedding conditioner sold in a clear one-gallon container, with and without a pump, and with a black label on it with “FURminator deShedding Ultra Premium Conditioner” written on it.

The affected products have the following lot numbers, which you can find on the bottom of the product:

  • P-00107-9 (No Pump) (UPC: 854460001073) (affecting only LOT CODE 211102)
  • P-00107P-9 (With Pump) (UPC: 854460001073) (affecting only LOT CODES 220402 through 240152)

The voluntary recall was made in partnership with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) after some lots were found to have been contaminated with bacteria, including one that can affect dogs and people with weakened immune system.

According to the CPSC, the bacteria potentially found in the recalled product, called “Pseudomonas aeruginosa”, can cause “a risk of serious infection that may require medical treatment.”

“The bacteria can enter the body if inhaled, through the eyes, or through a break in the skin,” they continued.

Currently, there have been no injuries reported. However, the CPSC said they have received four reports of mold developing in the recalled product’s container.

Both the CPSC and Spectrum Brands Pet Care are urging consumers who have bought the recalled product to immediately stop using the product.

CPSC is also instructing consumers to not empty the product prior to disposal or pour the product down the toiler and/or drain.

Furthermore, costumers who have purchased the affected product are instructed to the do the following in order to get a full refund:

  1. Consumers should mark the product with the word “Recalled”
  2. Write your name or initials and current date clearly on a piece of paper
  3. Take a photo of the paper (with the abovementioned details) with the bottle(s) showing the UPCs and Lot Code
  4. Take a photo of the paper (with the abovementioned details) with the bottle(s) disposed in the trash
  5. Register through www.prodprotect.com/recall/FURminator
