Description

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier, also called Staffy or the English Staffordshire Bull Terrier, is a well-known breed of muscular dog that originated in England. It belongs to the Terrier breed family which is notable for their distinguished personality and appearance.

Staffies have been bred to become game sports dog. Their smooth single coat usually comes in fawn, solid red, black, white, or blue colors with or with no white patches.

Height and Weight

The male members of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier normally stand a height of 14 to 16 in at the withers, and weigh 25 to 38 lbs. Bitches, on the other hand, commonly have a height of 13 to 15 in, and a weight of 23 to 25 lbs.

Temperament

Staffies, in general, are very courageous and obedient dogs. They are funny, friendly, and affectionate toward their family owners. The breed gets along well with children and other animals. Proper socialization is necessary to keep them from becoming highly combative with unfamiliar dogs.

Staffies are known to be active, persistent, and intelligent, though are not good swimmers. Owners are discouraged from allowing them to be off-leash unless the place is safe enough for the dog to roam freely. The breed can be trained for both competitive obedience and agility trials.

Furthermore, the breed generally love challenges and varieties. They are completely fearless and very curious; making them capable of jumping off a deck or even walk through a broken glass. Owners have to protect the breed from possible self-injuries.

Grooming

Staffordshire Bull Terriers are typically low-maintenance in terms of coat care. But because they are considered to be moderate shedders, owners still have to vacuum and clean the house on a regular basis.

Regular baths are also very important. Checking for fleas or other insects is necessary to keep them from acquiring skin infections.

Health Concerns

Members of the Staffy breed are generally healthy. Nonetheless, like any other canine, they are also known to suffer from a few health complications.

These include cataracts, hip dysplasia, tumors, and gas problems. They also tend to be overly sensitive to extreme temperatures. With proper attention, diet, and exercise, the breed can live for as long as 12 to 14 years.

Best Environment

Despite the breed’s extraordinary fighting skills, Staffordshire Bull Terriers are sill supposed to become house dogs. Because of their excessive sensitivity to both cold and hot climates, Staffies are suited to live in places where intense temperatures are not normal.

The breed craves for human companionship so ignoring their social needs may cause them to develop separation anxiety. Providing them with access to a securely fenced yard, as well as giving them plenty of chewable toys will make them happy.

In addition, vigorous exercises carried out on a daily basis are necessary.
