The Standard Schnauzer, also called Mittelschnauzer (meaning “medium schnauzer”), is a popular breed of medium-sized dog that originated in Germany.

Renaissance paintings suggest that this breed has existed for several centuries. But it wasn’t until the mid-1800s when German breeders took an interest in standardizing the breed.

During this time, the breed was called Wirehaired Pinscher. And German breeders cross-bred the gray Wolfspitz and black German Poodle to produce the Standard Schnauzer’s unique coat color and texture that we know of today.

Furthermore, the breed belongs to the working breed family which is distinguished for their excellent guarding and rescuing skills. And they been bred to become guard dogs and vermin-hunting companions.

Today, these dogs, with their working dog heritage, have become excellent watchdogs. And with a lively, loving, and protective personality, they have also become popular family companions.

Appearance

The Standard Schnauzer is easily distinguished from other breeds thanks to their distinct beard and eyebrows, giving them an appearance that is more expressive and dignified than other breeds.

The breed’s wiry double coat is dense and hard outside and soft underneath. And their hair distinctly stands up at the back along with its coarser and longer bushy bears, whiskers, and eyebrows. Furthermore, its coat colors usually include solid black, as well as salt and pepper.

Height and Weight

The male members of the Standard Schnauzer breed normally stand a height of 18 to 20 in at the withers, and weigh 30 to 45 lbs. Bitches, on the other hand, commonly have a height of 17 to 19 in, and a weight of 30 to 40 lbs.

These intelligent and alert dogs are highly adaptable, fitting well into various living environments, from city apartments to rural homes.

These dogs are delightful, and reliable around children, though can be quite reserved with strangers. They also have the tendency to become rather aggressive toward other dogs of similar sex.

Training

Standard Schnauzers have strong personalities and can be stubborn. And because of this, they may not be suitable for first-time dog owners.

To keep Standard Schnauzers from becoming willful and demanding, owners have to display confident and consistent leadership over them. And if not, they will rule over you and the household in no time!

Even constant socialization, firm yet gentle training, and adequate physical stimulation are highly necessary to prevent the breed from turning out to be overly protective, territorial, dominant, and untrustworthy with children.

Grooming

Although Standard Schnauzers tend to shed minimally, they are relatively high-maintenance when it comes to grooming department.

Their beard needs daily cleaning, and their coat has to be brushed twice a week. Furthermore, the breed’s fur would also require stripping and clipping on a quarterly basis.

Health Concerns

Standard Schnauzers are a hardy breed. They have an average lifespan of 12 to 14 years. However, there are a few health complications known to plague the breed. And these include dermatitis, heart disease, tumors, and hip dysplasia.

Best Environment

The breed is usually tolerant with apartment-living, but access to a safe yard space is ideal. Because of their athletic nature, Standard Schnauzers require a considerable space for movement. And daily physical exertions would be necessary to meet their exercise needs. Additionally, activities like long leashed walks and several vigorous plays are great for them.
