When a little dog fell into a frozen pond in the Gagarin Park in the Crimean city of Simferopol, Russia on Saturday, she quickly became trapped, freezing, and unable to pull herself out and onto the slippery, icy ground.

As onlookers watched helplessly, bundled in heavy coats, scarves, and mittens to shield against the 23-degrees Fahrenheit (-5C) air, one ordinary man stripped down to his skivvies and, without regard for his own health, slid into the pond to rescue the drowning pup.

About 45-seconds after sliding into the frigid pond, the man carried the tiny dog ashore where the pair were greeted by onlookers offering a hand to an ordinary man whose act of compassion quickly made him a hero.
