Today’s shopping spree took me to PetSmart in Plymouth, Minnesota and PetCo in Eden Prairie, Minnesota; both western suburbs of Minneapolis, Minnesota and 13 miles apart from each other. This time my focus was who is cheaper on canned dog food PetCo or PetSmart.
I stopped first at PetSmart and bought a variety of wet dog foods, from 3.5 ounce plastic containers to 5.5 and 6.0 ounce cans to the 10 ounce plastic container with a lid and the taller cans that vary in size from 10.05 oz to 12.3, 12.5 and 12.7 oz to 13.0 and 13.2 oz.
All in all I purchased 22 cans of dog food at PetSmart. My next stop was PetCo to buy the exact same 22 cans of dog food. Just as I found with the dry food shopping comparison, I discovered that PetCo and PetSmart don’t carry the same brands, serving sizes or flavors in all the canned dog food selections. In this instance, Petco had 11 of the 22 items I was shopping for.
And like the dry dog food price comparison, PetSmart won the price challenge, paws down. PetCo did not have one can of dog food, among the 11 that were the same, that was cheaper than PetSmart.
Two of the 11 cans purchased at PetCo were the same price as PetSmart; but none were cheaper.
If you’ve wondered who is cheaper on canned dog food PetCo or PetSmart, here’s your answer. Not only is PetSmart cheaper by as much as 8% in some instances, but they have a greater variety than PetCo to select from. And, if you join their PetPerks program you can save even more.

Oh – the answer to the can sizes above is:
Eukanuba 12.3 oz
Blue Wilderness 12.5 oz
Castor & Pollux 12.7 oz
Purina 13 oz
Innova 13.2 0z
