An Alabama woman visited Georgia to house-sit for her daughter and brought a chicken along for the visit. And, when her daughter’s dog killed the chicken, she duct taped its dead body around the dog’s neck to “teach it a lesson.”

About 10:30pm on Monday night, police were called to a home in Columbus, Georgia, after several reports of a dog with a chicken duct taped around his neck were received.

A 74-year-old woman, the mother of the homeowner, had apparently brought a live chicken with her from Phenix City, Alabama while she house sat for her daughter in Columbus.

“I don’t know if that means it’s a pet chicken or what, but she’s house sitting, brings her chicken with her to her daughter’s house and the dog kills the chicken,” Columbus Mayor Teresa Tomlinson said. “So she said that she duct taped the dead chicken to the dog to, quote, ‘Teach it a lesson not to kill her chickens.’”

The woman told police that it was a common training technique used to teach dogs not to kill chickens. Instead of arresting the woman on animal cruelty charges, police contacted Animal Control who came to the residence and issued a citation to appear in court where she could face up to 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.

The dog was not removed from the home.
