The Poodle, also referred to as Carniche or Barbone, is a trendy breed of dog that originated in Germany. The breed belongs to the Non-sporting category which is generally a diverse group of dogs. It is composed of dog breeds distinguished for their sturdy built, or differences in personality and appearance. The Poodle breed has three known varieties: the Standard, Toy, and Miniature. Poodles have been bred to become companions. Their coat is dense and curly, and may come in various colors such as solid black, brown, white, blue, apricot, or grey.

Height and Weight

Standard Poodle

Both the male and female Standard Poodles commonly have a weight of 45 to 65 lbs., and a height of 15 to 21 in at the withers.
Considered to be the oldest dog breed, has a height of over 15 in at the withers.

The Miniature Poodle, however, stands over 10 to 15 inches in height, measured at the withers. They weigh about 15 to 17 lbs.Toy Poodle Height and Weight

The Toy Poodle varies at a height of below 10 inches at the withers. They weigh around 6 to 9 lbs.

Temperament

Poodles have been notable for their keen sense of instinctual drive. To be specific, the breed has a more evident marking and hunting behavior as compared to other dog breeds. Even Toy Poodles can point birds. This popular breed is identified to be extremely energetic. They easily get bored, though can be quite creative about looking for mischief. More often than not, Poodles enjoy having the spotlight. They are very intelligent and attentive. In fact, the breed can be easily trained to perform astonishing tricks that make use of their mental and agility skills.

As mentioned, Poodles have dense coats which could either be curly or corded. They require regular grooming to avoid hair-matting. Hair-clipping needs to be done to the pet every 1.5 to 2 months. Their ears also have to be kept clean and dry to keep it from any form of infection.Health ConcernsMore often than not, members of the Poodle breed can live for as long as 10 to 13 years. Some of the common health conditions found to be associated with the breed are renal diseases, dog allergies, bloat, cataracts, epilepsy, and Addison’s disease.

Poodles find it hard to live outdoors. They like to be in the company of humans. As much as possible, this breed has to be around their family. Because Poodles are very energetic, they need to receive adequate physical and mental exercise in order to keep them fit. Ideally, daily walk and stimulating play sessions such as swimming have to be provided. Poodles love to romp and run.
